Feel Good Features: Candy Bomber reenactment to deliver a story of hope to Manteo this holiday season

By Janet Arnold, The Outer Banks Life contributor

A remarkable story of courage, hope and kindness will once again come to life in Manteo, North Carolina, on Sunday, December 13, 2026, with the annual Candy Bomber reenactment.

For Karin Edmond, this event is much more than a celebration of history. It is deeply personal.

Karin was raised in Berlin, Germany, during World War II and experienced firsthand the hardships of growing up during those difficult years. Food was scarce, electricity was limited, and there were times when Karin and her brothers and sisters went to bed hungry.

In June 1948, the Soviet Union blockaded West Berlin, cutting off food, fuel and other essential supplies. Starvation appeared inevitable. But the United States, Great Britain and France came to the rescue with what became known as the Berlin Airlift. Allied airplanes flew supplies into West Berlin around the clock, with aircraft arriving approximately every 90 seconds.

Despite the airlift, children were receiving only about 750 calories a day. Then, in the midst of such hardship, came an unforgettable act of hope.

Lieutenant Gail Halvorsen, who became known as the “Candy Bomber,” began dropping candy to the children of Berlin using homemade parachutes. For many children, it was the first time they had ever tasted chocolate, candy or chewing gum. Those little parachutes carried much more than candy — they carried a message that someone cared.

Although Colonel Halvorsen has passed away, Karin has made it her mission for more than 26 years to keep his legacy and remarkable act of kindness alive.

This year’s celebration begins on Saturday, December 12, 2026, at Dare County Regional Airport, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to meet the air crew and tour the bomber.

On Sunday, December 13, children will enjoy candy drops, a visit with Santa and a special flight featuring parachuted candy. Light refreshments will be provided as the community celebrates the 78th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift.

What began decades ago as a simple act of kindness by an American pilot became a symbol of hope for the children of Berlin. Today, Karin Edmond is helping carry that message forward in Manteo, reminding us all that even during the darkest times, a small gift of kindness can bring light, joy and hope.
