Author Kathryn A. Roy explores history and adventures in new guidebook, ‘100 Things to Do on the Outer Banks Before You Die’

Reedy Press is pleased to announce the release of our newest guidebook, 100 Things to Do on the Outer Banks Before You Die by Kathryn A. Roy.

Spanning more than 150 miles, the Outer Banks consist of a peninsula and barrier islands located on the eastern coast of North Carolina. Here the stretches of beach are as endless as the canopy of stars that grace its night skies, giving a true sense of remoteness.

This guide will cover destinations from Carova Beach to Ocracoke, collectively known as the OBX—a beach destination that is incredibly rich in culture and history. From the close-knit surf community to the ocean’s most fearsome pirates and nautical tragedies, every corner of the Outer Banks is steeped in tales of passion, innovation, and long-lost souls.

Learn about the first English settlers who arrived in the late 1500s and vanished after a couple years. Explore Roanoke Island’s role in serving as a prominent Freedmen’s Colony after the Civil War. Uncover the stories behind the thousands of shipwrecks that gave the region its nickname as the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

The amazing list of don’t-miss activities continues in travel author Kathryn A. Roy’s 100 Things to Do on the Outer Banks Before You Die, which includes recommendations to suit every season and getaway type, along with tips for making the most of your adventures.

Whether you are a lifelong resident or a first-time visitor, Roy designed the guidebook to appeal to every Outer Banks enthusiast. She notes that her target audience spans from “locals rediscovering their home to visitors seeing it for the first time, and everyone in between. I love talking to locals who can’t believe how many of the 100 items they haven’t done, and it’s a great way for visitors to have a go-to list of recommendations for their trip!”

As a marine scientist, Roy’s unique background also heavily influenced how she approached her selection of activities. “The ‘to dos’ I listed definitely lean heavy on the outdoorsy side and focus on the local natural features, but the Outer Banks also caters to this easily so it wasn’t much of a challenge to lean into,” Roy explains. “I consider myself an eco-conscious person which means making decisions that reduce our overall impact on the environment, so I focused on a lot of memorable experiences and consumables versus material possessions.”
