Southern Shores resident recognized for keeping waste cans out of local landfill

Southern Shores resident Joel Newton has turned a simple act of neighborly goodwill into a major community effort, repairing nearly 300 damaged trash and recycling cans across town.

The Town of Southern Shores formally recognized Newton’s dedication during a recent Town Council meeting, presenting him with a Volunteer Appreciation Award.

Newton donates his time and repair skills at no charge, charging residents only for necessary replacement parts such as lids, wheels, or axles. His clever, hands-on fixes have saved local homeowners money while diverting usable plastic containers from the area landfill.

“Joel, on behalf of the town, thank you for your generosity, your ingenuity, your dedication, and especially for the time you have given to help your neighbors,” Mayor Elizabeth Morey said during the presentation.

Residents in need of repairs to their trash or recycling bins can request connection with Newton by emailing info@southernshores-nc.gov or calling Town Hall at (252) 231-2694.

For brand-new cans, replacements, or the removal of unfixable containers, residents should contact Bay Disposal directly at (252) 491-5105.
